Leslie,
I have found cats to be incredibly intelligent! Sammy used to make me very nervous. He would watch me shave almost every morning and liked to drink running water. I observed him on a number of occasions at the sink trying to turn the water on! Fortunately the faucet required a thumb to use it effectively. It was still a cause for concern as I thought he may some day figure out how to get the handle to move. Of course he would not shut it off.
It is probably a combination of a low energy way to be fed (animals are good at using the least amount of energy to eat), the other is the attention and companionship provided by your feeding her.
Our Phineas has discovered the pleasure of grooming and has started asking to be groomed. He comes and says hello, wants me to follow him and we go to the glass sliding door and he flops down and stretches out so I can groom him. If I put the brush down, he holds it between his paws and uses it to groom his face and chin. I know this sounds incredible. I plan to try and get a picture of him doing this. When I do, I will send it.
Hope you all are having a great day!
George

Oh George...the things I have to tell you all but I am absolutely floored by it. Other than this mess with Em in trouble....you just will laugh and laugh about this one.
You ever have a cat revert to being an infant? Well I have one. She PREFERS that I shoot BABY FOOD into her mouth with a syringe now......she sits perched and ready, opens her mouth, I squirt and she eats. I just am flabbergasted by the whole thing.....unreal. This cat is playing me big time now.

She is still with us. She is going to live. She is healing, exhausted to some degree but she is back nearly completely. The major turn was yesterday morning, I realized she didn't "smell" sick from inside anymore, it was an abrubt turn too. She has begun to eat on her own, very small amounts but eating. She is purring up a major storm. She is walking better. She is not making me do horrid stuff to her left and right anymore. She is also level on her blood glucose. She is finally out of the woods and back to life. She made noise this morning somewhat like a meow. When she starts talking away at us...then we know she is back all the way. And the best part of that statement is that I know she will now.
In the meantime, I thank each of you for your concerns and queries. And information! You guys are the best!
