Subject: [GNARC] Arduino or Raspberry Pi CW Program
Hi All:
History: Perhaps two decades ago one of our club members, Mike
Casciolo K1DZH, made available a firmware module which plugged into
the back of a VIC-20 computer to change it into (IMHO) a deluxe
RTTY/ASCII RTTY/CW/AMTOR terminal unit. It was, hands down the best
setup I'd ever used for the purpose. I just looked him up and I see
he lives in Darien nowadays. Yesterday I sent him a letter by US Mail
since QRZ doesn't list an email address for him.
Believe it or not I still have the VIC-20 and Mike's "firmware"
cartridge... a small benefit of being unable to throw away junk in my
basement... my old SE-30 Mac is still sitting there, too. I'd be
worried about trying to turn on either of these old dinosaurs!
I am looking for a CW keyboard program that I can use with
(preferably) a Raspberry Pi but I'm willing to purchase an Arduino
for the purpose if the Arduino is a superior platform. Frankly if I
could duplicate Mike's program or port it (with his assistance) to
one of these platforms it would be even nicer.
My requirements are simple:
* It must accept input from a keyboard, preferably USB but I
still have a few older PS2(?) type.. (the kind with the round plug)
* It must allow me to adjust speed.
Deluxe extra's that would be nice:
* Spacingadjustment ("Farnsworth" speed)
* Character weighting
* Decoding... not sure I like this approach but for fast CW it
might be a good backup.
Does anyone in the club use such a program?
If I have to program an Arduino myself I believe I'll be able to make
one at least send CW. It would be nice to have something more
sophisticated, of course!
Finally, if anyone knows Mike's email address I'd like to have it.
It's not listed at QRZ.com which may imply that he's not active.
