I used a rubber mallet. Works great! The panty hoes filled with calcium
chloride does in fact melt channels through the dams. We had 6" thick ice
dams! Those salt socks are useful if you cant get to sections of your roof
safely with a hammer or if you feel uncomfortable with the safety risks
involved.
