Just realized I already got a small mag mount whip, I'll work with that. so what what be a good antenna to throw in the van to work from here to ct and Long Island with? What would I need? The schuylkill mall and lowes as well as the mountains on any direction out of town are about 1600 ft el, would the satellite antenna be good for the 450 fm work? Maybe it's time to get into satellites, also maybe with the new te systems amp I'd be able to work moonbounce....from home station, .if I recall bob said to get a 2m-7, going to look up boom length on that now......

Very good info on the ice damming, I'll be entertaining a beam antenna at some point to go portable with though at this time just wanted something I can move around within the various jobsites right on the same block and the house I am. It will be hooked either the ht or the ic2300. Preferably small like a whip but not needing a ground plane, though there's always a radiator, fridge, file cabinet to put a mag mount on,maybe that is the way to go....the location here is basically a crater with mountains all around it hence the birthplace of cable tv, mahanoy city pa fn10wt

Going to look something like this once I'm finished. You fill panty hoe legs with calcium chloride flakes, tie off the ends, and place them perpendicular to the ice dam with the ends hanging over the eave. They melt troughs through the dam and allow the pooled water behind it to drain.
This is the quick fix. The long term fix is to ensure you have a ridge vent, soffet vents, good insulation of the attic floors (dual layers in the NE even), and that you find and squash any sources of heat leakage into the attic.
Essentially if you can assure the temperature of the air in attic is the same as the outside ambient air temperature, you will never have ice damming and the costly repairs of the subsequent water damage they bring!
