The best way to interface any external pro mic is to put it through a mic
processor.  Cheap symmetrix or rane rack mount units are plentiful, with
built in EQ and processing threshold and compression ratios, etc.  use the
processor to build your avg level and feed your rig just to the point of
any built in clipper.  Better yet, bypass the audio shaping entirely.
