It's 1/2inch aluminum  masting from DX Engineering, internal threading on each end.

  It'll be fine. Same set-up I first had on my p/u roof before I went solid to a rail. Although yours looks a little longer (36+" I'm guessing), mine acted as a tree branch wacker a few times at the town dump, it stayed put. 
  Wha'da'ya got, 3/8" rod inside 1/2" conduit?  It may bow a li'l but it won't fall off. Remove it now and then to clean the seaweed that gets between magnet and trunk. That stuff will degrade the holding power.
